Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, illustrated by John Howe.

A large-format pop-up adaptation of The Hobbit with John Howe's illustrations. Five three-dimensional spreads follow Bilbo's journey, with pull-out scrolls containing extracts from Tolkien's text. The photographs include the encounter with Gollum and the dragon Smaug.

The pictorial boards show Smaug on the front cover, with decorative rune borders. The rear cover carries the original printed price of £16.99. The photographs show light handling wear at the board edges and corners.

The two photographed pop-up scenes are shown erected and retain bright colours. The photographs do not demonstrate the operation or completeness of every tab, scroll and moving part, so no claim of a fully tested mechanism is made.

John Howe's imaginative artwork brings Bilbo's adventure into three dimensions.
