With a typed note "with the compliments of Professor E.V. Gordon." Gordon was a contemporary and friend of Tolkien and translator of this book!

Bound in the publisher's reddish-brown cloth, with gilt spine lettering and the Oxford device. No dust jacket is present.
Rubbing and small pale marks to the boards, fading to the spine, and minor wear at the corners and spine ends. The page edges, endpapers and preliminary leaves show toning and scattered foxing, including the signed leaf and title page.
The front pastedown bears additional pencil notes identifying the volume as Tolkien's copy, together with a numerical reference; these separate annotations are not attributed to Tolkien.

Eric Valentine Gordon (14 February 1896 – 1938) was a Canadian philologist who worked alongside J.R.R. Tolkien on various scholastic works and published books. Gordon was educated at Victoria College and McGill University. He also attended University College at Oxford University (1920), and later taught at Leeds University (1922-1931) and Manchester University (1932-1938).

Gordon joined Tolkien at Leeds in 1922. They became close friends and scholarly collaborators, producing their edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in 1925. After Gordon's death in 1938, his widow Ida completed the revision of his edition of Pearl, published in 1953 with Tolkien's contribution on its form and purpose.

A significant association copy linking Tolkien's personal library with E.V. Gordon's work on Scandinavian antiquity.
