Smith of Wootton Major (Advance Uncorrected Proof)
J.R.R. Tolkien. Illustrated by Roger Garland.
Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1991.
This is a rare and desirable uncorrected proof copy of Smith of Wootton Major, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1991. It is bound in plain white wrappers and issued with the final version of the illustrated dust jacket by Roger Garland.
The book is in Very Good+ condition. Internally clean with slight natural toning and some light spotting to prelims. Pages are crisp and unmarked. The wrapper shows only minimal handling. Garland’s richly imaginative illustrations accompany Tolkien’s enchanting faerie tale about craft, childhood, and wonder.
This proof was produced in extremely limited quantities, likely for internal or review purposes ahead of the US release. Unlike standard hardback editions, proof copies were never intended for public sale and are now extremely difficult to locate — particularly with their original jackets intact.
Originally published in the UK in 1967, this new version was reformatted and enhanced for the American market in 1991, including new artwork from Roger Garland.
A stunning and elusive Tolkien collectible — ideal for serious collectors of Tolkien proofs and early states.
