The Hobbit Heritage of Literature Edition Uncorrected Proof
J.R.R. Tolkien.
Published Heritage of Literature Edition, Longmans, London, 1966
This Book is in Good Condition. Marks of cellotape on the first pages, several pages loose.
A lot of wear and stains on text block and pages.
Does not have Thror’s Map and the Map of Wilderland on the endpapers. Tolkien's black and white illustrations are not included.
J.R.R.Tolkien the Hobbit proofs are very rare to find and extremely rare Tolkien collectables
This one with Tolkien's name misspelled on the front cover as 'Tolkren'. The book has no title pages, it just starts with 1. An unexpected party and Tolkien's most famous opening line "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort." and the book ends with "You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all! 'Thank goodness! ' said Bilbo laughing, and handed him the tobacco jar." And these two sentences sum up so completely what the book is about.
There are only ever a very small amount of these made and they are almost never for sale. I have never seen another one in 30 years.
The exterior red and white paper shows some wear to the corner tips, signs of discoloration, and some cracking and minor fraying at the spine.
It shows the Longmans name and logo in checkered pattern. Part of the "uncorrected proof label" missing.
This proof copy is the ultimate Tolkien Collectors Dream.
