J.R.R. Tolkien: The Shaping of Middle-earth – Uncorrected Proof

An American uncorrected proof in green paper wrappers, printed in black with Elvish borders. The cover and title page give ISBN 0-395-42501-8 and publisher’s code 6-97088-5.

An Advance Uncorrected Proof notice is printed on an opening leaf, rather than supplied as a separately laid-in review slip. It gives a probable publication date of November 1986 and probable price of $16.95, and indicates illustrations, a two-page map and an appendix.

The fourth volume of The History of Middle-earth, bringing together the Quenta, the Ambarkanta and the Annals, with the earliest Silmarillion and the first map, edited and contextualised by Christopher Tolkien.

The wrappers retain a clean appearance in the photographs, with light handling wear and a small crease at an upper rear corner. The spine shows slight wear at its ends. The photographed preliminary pages appear generally clean, with light paper toning. A full physical collation has not been established from the photographs.
