J.R.R. Tolkien: The Shaping of Middle-earth – Uncorrected Proof

An extremely scarce **uncorrected proof** of *The Shaping of Middle-earth*, the fourth volume in *The History of Middle-earth* and a critical part of the textual evolution of *The Silmarillion* and *The Lord of the Rings*.

This advance proof copy was issued by Houghton Mifflin in 1986 in **dark green wraps** decorated with Elvish border motifs and printed cover text. A **publisher’s review slip** is laid in, detailing the projected publication date (November 1986) and retail price ($16.95), as well as the inclusion of a two-page map.

The volume includes the original 1926 *Silmarillion*, the 1930 *Quenta Noldorinwa*, and for the first time in print, the *Ambarkanta* — Tolkien’s only account of the shape and structure of the imagined Universe — accompanied by charts and cosmological diagrams. Also reproduced is the **first map of Beleriand**, and the **Annals of Valinor** and **Annals of Beleriand**, which solidify the chronology of the First Age.

**Condition**: Near fine. Original wraps are clean and sharp, spine uncreased. Interior pages are crisp and unmarked. A clean, collectible copy of this fragile and scarce proof.

A foundational entry in *The History of Middle-earth*, and a **vital record of Tolkien's evolving legendarium** — as edited by his son Christopher Tolkien. Scarce in this pre-publication state, especially with the review slip present and well-preserved.

A phenomenal addition to any Tolkien collection — seldom seen in this condition.
