Humphrey Carpenter: The Inklings (Uncorrected Proof, Houghton Mifflin, 1979)

Houghton Mifflin Company, 1979 – Yellow proof copy

Carpenter’s study of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams and their friends, in yellow paper wrappers printed in black and marked Uncorrected Proofs. The cover and title page carry publisher’s code 6-83271. The copyright page states First American Edition and bears the earlier copyright date of 1978.

Accompanied by a folded blue Houghton Mifflin Advance Report from the Editors, dated 16 October 1978. This publisher’s publicity sheet introduces the book and its author and gives ISBN 0-395-27628-4. Its date precedes publication of the American edition in 1979.

The yellow wrappers show surface soiling, rubbing, scattered marks and creases. There is conspicuous loss of the yellow surface paper on the lower spine and adjacent rear-cover edge, with further wear at the foot and corners. The opening blank leaf has small puncture-like marks near its outer edge. The photographed pages are lightly toned and include scattered dark specks and uneven proof printing. The blue report has horizontal folds, light edge wear and a small nick at its lower edge.

An American pre-publication copy of Carpenter’s portrait of the Inklings, retaining its publisher’s advance publicity sheet.
