An American uncorrected proof of Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth in grey textured paper wrappers, printed in black with decorative Elvish borders. The title page gives ISBN 0-395-29917-9 and publisher’s code 6-97069; the copyright page is dated 1980 and states that the book was printed in the United States of America.

The title page credits Christopher Tolkien with the introduction, commentary, index and maps. The photographed contents pages retain placeholder page references rather than final page numbers, a characteristic of this pre-publication text.

The wrappers show light rubbing and surface marks, minor edge and corner wear, and creasing at the head of the spine. The paper is toned, with visible yellow-brown spotting on the opening blank leaf and scattered small spots on the photographed preliminary pages. The photographs show several interior openings but do not establish a full collation; no claim is made here for an exact page count or completeness of all maps and supplementary matter.
