J.R.R. Tolkien: Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (Uncorrected Proof with Publisher’s Slip)
Houghton Mifflin Company, 1981
An American uncorrected proof in green paper wrappers, lettered in black. The cover and title page give ISBN 0-395-31555-7 and publisher’s code 6-83269. The copyright page is dated 1981 and states that the book was printed in the United States of America. The photographed contents page lists its sections without completed page numbers.
A separate Houghton Mifflin Advance Uncorrected Proof slip accompanies the book. The author and title fields are typed, as is the sender’s name, Cheryl Arthur; the probable publication date and price fields are blank.
The book offers intimate insight into Tolkien’s personal and professional life through his letters, touching on key themes such as Middle-earth’s mythology, his Catholic faith, and academic career. Among the most important posthumous publications by or about Tolkien.
The green wrappers retain clear lettering but show a diagonal scuff across the lower front, light edge and corner wear, and several small nicks and creases at the upper edge of the rear wrapper. The photographed opening pages appear generally clean with mild toning and occasional small marks. The cream publisher’s slip has light toning and handling wear.
A pre-publication copy of Tolkien’s letters, retaining its Houghton Mifflin proof slip.
