Tolkien: A Biography (Uncorrected Proof with Publisher Material)

Houghton Mifflin Company, 1977

An American uncorrected proof of Carpenter’s biography, in textured brown wrappers lettered in black. The front cover is marked Uncorrected Proofs and gives ISBN 0-395-25360-8. The photographed copyright page leaves the copyright particulars unfinished and states that the book was printed in the United States of America.

Accompanied by a blue folded Houghton Mifflin Advance Report from the Editors, dated 12/7/76, discussing the biography, Carpenter’s access to family material and the forthcoming Silmarillion. An Advance Uncorrected Proof form is positioned inside the front wrapper: its typed entries give a probable publication date of June 29, 1977 and a probable price of $10.00, followed by a question mark. These are publisher’s publicity materials, not author inscriptions.

The brown wrappers appear well preserved, with light edge and corner wear. The book is photographed both with and without a clear protective cover. The opening leaves and page edges show mild toning and a few small spots; a staple is visible on the first blank leaf. The blue report has horizontal folds and light handling wear. No claim of an unread or fully collated copy is made.

A pre-publication view of Carpenter’s Tolkien biography, retaining its contemporary American publisher’s publicity material.
