An exceptional uncorrected proof copy of Tolkien: A Biography by Humphrey Carpenter, issued by Houghton Mifflin in 1977. The proof is bound in textured brown wraps and is complete with two extremely rare accompanying ephemera items:

- A blue single-fold “Advance Report from the Editors” detailing Carpenter’s approach, the significance of the biography, and key facts about Tolkien and the upcoming publication of The Silmarillion. - An internal Advance Uncorrected Proof sheet filled out by hand and listing publication price, date, and editorial notes.

The book is clean, sharp, and appears unread. Together, these components form a scarce and highly desirable advance review package from the American publisher.

Extremely scarce with both Houghton Mifflin press items laid in. A fine Tolkien collectible.
