An uncorrected proof in red paper wrappers, with the proof designation printed prominently on the front. The copyright page states First published in 1975 and gives ISBN 0 04 821035 8. Printed in Great Britain in 11-point Garamond by W. & J. Mackay Limited, Chatham.

The front wrapper carries a faint publisher’s publication/price stamp with a handwritten numeral. A separate compliments slip from Julian Nangle of Words Etcetera, Child Okeford, Dorset, accompanies the book. The slip bears a typed message and initials; it is bookseller material, not a Tolkien autograph.

This volume brings together Tolkien’s translations of three medieval poems, with a preface by Christopher Tolkien.

The red wrappers show rubbing, scratches, small surface abrasions and corner creasing; the rear has a light diagonal crease near its lower corner. The opening leaf and page edges are toned, with some scattered spotting and minor edge wear. The photographed text pages appear generally clean. The cream compliments slip has light toning.

A red-wrapper proof of Tolkien’s medieval translations, accompanied by a bookseller’s compliments slip.
