J.R.R. Tolkien: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl and Sir Orfeo (Uncorrected Proof Copy)
George Allen & Unwin, London, 1975
A rare **uncorrected proof copy** of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo, translated by J.R.R. Tolkien and published posthumously by George Allen & Unwin. Bound in plain red wraps, this scarce pre-publication issue predates the first edition and was produced in very limited numbers for internal or review use.
This copy is accompanied by a **laid-in compliments slip** from noted rare book dealer Julian Nangle of Words Etcetera. The wraps are clean and well-preserved with only minor marks; the text block is tight and internally crisp. A stamp to the front cover shows the provisional retail price at the time.
Extremely scarce uncorrected proof copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo, translated by J.R.R. Tolkien. Issued by George Allen & Unwin in 1975 in red paper wraps. This example includes a laid-in compliments slip from Dorset rare book dealer Julian Nangle. One of the rarest Tolkien proofs, this edition is notable for its clean presentation and ephemeral provenance.
This proof issue holds high appeal for Tolkien collectors and bibliographic specialists, offering insight into the transitional publishing phase of Tolkien’s academic translations. Uncorrected proof copies of Tolkien’s non-Middle-earth work are exceptionally hard to find — especially in such presentable condition.
An outstanding example of Tolkien’s lesser-seen translation work in true pre-publication state — highly collectible.
