J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lost Road and Other Writings (Uncorrected Proof)
Houghton Mifflin, 1987
An uncommon uncorrected proof copy of The Lost Road and Other Writings, published in 1987 by Houghton Mifflin in the U.S. This is the fifth volume in *The History of Middle-earth* series, edited by Christopher Tolkien.
This early state features orange wraps decorated with Tolkien’s Elvish tengwar script, echoing the decorative elements from the published version. Included is the original Houghton Mifflin review slip, which is typically lacking.
The Lost Road explores early versions of the Númenórean legend and linguistic development of Tolkien's mythology, including The Etymologies and The Annals of Valinor and Beleriand.
Scarce 1987 uncorrected proof copy of The Lost Road and Other Writings by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien. Volume 5 in *The History of Middle-earth* series.
This advance copy was issued by Houghton Mifflin ahead of the U.S. release and features distinctive orange wraps with Elvish border designs. Includes the original review slip laid in — rarely seen with these proof copies.
A clean, complete, and well-preserved example. Minor crease to upper cover edge, else near fine.
A desirable and elusive pre-publication issue from the foundational HoME series.
A very good to near fine copy with only a small crease at the top edge. Interior is clean and tight — a highly desirable collector’s copy of this rare proof state.
These proofs were printed in very small numbers and seldom appear on the market — especially with the publisher’s slip present.
