J.R.R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion (First American Edition with Press Release & Booklet)
Houghton Mifflin Company, 1977
A superb example of the **first American edition** of *The Silmarillion*, issued by Houghton Mifflin in 1977 and accompanied by two pieces of original publisher ephemera — a **press release letter** dated August 10, 1977, and a folded Houghton Mifflin promotional booklet introducing The Silmarillion and J.R.R. Tolkien’s publishing legacy — rarely seen.
The book itself is in excellent condition: tight, clean pages, sharp corners, and minimal shelfwear. The iconic dust jacket is bright and unclipped at $10.95, with minor creasing and a few edge nicks, but very well-preserved overall.
The **laid-in publicity letter** (signed in type by Carolyn Carswell, Director of Advertising and Publicity) was sent to reviewers and stresses the coordinated international release date of September 15, 1977. The accompanying folded booklet** details Tolkien's bibliography, the development of *The Silmarillion*, and Christopher Tolkien’s role — a unique artifact in its own right and seldom seen.
Together, these pieces form a **rarely offered complete review package** for *The Silmarillion*. A standout collectible for serious Tolkien bibliophiles and collectors of fantasy publishing history.
Highly desirable Tolkien ephemera — especially rare with both press letter and booklet present.
