J.R.R. Tolkien: The Return of the Shadow (Review Copy)
Houghton Mifflin, 1989
A scarce review copy of *The Return of the Shadow*, the sixth volume in *The History of Middle-earth* edited by Christopher Tolkien. This first American edition, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1989, comes with the original publisher's folded press release, featuring blurbs, ISBN, price, and media contact.
Bound in black cloth-backed boards with orange endpapers and issued in a pictorial dust jacket illustrated by Alan Lee. The press release highlights the book’s publication date (January 5, 1989), and includes quotes from *Publishers Weekly*, *Hartford Courant*, and *Mythprint*. A rare piece of Tolkien ephemera, preserved here in excellent condition.
Book is clean and square; dust jacket bright with only minimal shelfwear. The press material is crisp, folded as issued, and housed in a protective sleeve.
An uncommon survival of Houghton Mifflin’s Tolkien promotional campaign — ideal for completists and collectors of Tolkieniana.
