Volume VII of The History of Middle-earth and part two of The History of The Lord of the Rings. The copyright page gives 1989 and a complete number line ending in 1. ISBN 0-395-51562-9.

This hardcover review copy is accompanied by Houghton Mifflin publicity material, including a release displaying the book’s cover and a sheet quoting reviews of earlier volumes. The material names the publisher’s publicity contact and is photographed in protective sleeves, with folds and age-toning visible.

Black cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and orange endpapers. The illustrated dust jacket retains the printed $19.95 price and explicitly credits Alan Lee for its artwork. A colour reproduction of Tolkien’s Orthanc drawing appears at the front of the book.

The cloth shows scattered pale speckling and light rubbing, rather than being uniformly clean. The jacket has light edge wear and is housed in a clear protective cover. The photographed text pages appear generally clean, with light age-toning and some spotting visible on the outer page edges.

Christopher Tolkien traces the development of The Lord of the Rings through drafts involving Moria, Lothlórien, Rohan and Isengard, alongside maps and commentary.

A first-printing review copy that preserves both the book and evidence of its original American publicity campaign.
