The Silmarillion – 1977 Clowes Dummy with Priced Dust Jacket

A partially printed dummy of The Silmarillion, with the George Allen & Unwin 1977 imprint and William Clowes & Sons printing credit. The photographs show the title page, copyright page, foreword and contents, followed by text through page 32 and a blank facing page. This is a promotional sample rather than a complete reading copy.

The dark blue cloth binding is accompanied by a dust jacket carrying the printed domestic price of £4.95. Tolkien’s emblems decorate the front and rear panels. The original association of this jacket and book cannot be established from photographs alone. No numerical claim about surviving copies is made.

The jacket shows light surface rubbing and edge wear, with age-toning and scattered spotting on the flaps and inner surface. The photographed paper is lightly toned and generally clean. The photographs do not constitute a full collation of all blank gatherings or maps.

An intriguing 32-page Silmarillion dummy, preserving the contrast between a finished-looking binding and a largely unprinted interior.
