J.R.R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion (Clowes Dummy Copy - Variant 1)
George Allen & Unwin, 1977
A rare Clowes dummy copy of *The Silmarillion*, created by George Allen & Unwin in 1977 to promote the forthcoming publication. These dummies were never meant for sale, but were distributed to booksellers as display copies in advance of release.
This example is Variant 1, with printed content only up to page 32. It lacks the half-title, title-page, and map, as issued — ending with the copyright page and foreword, followed by blank gatherings. Bound in full dark blue publisher's cloth and housed in a first-state dust jacket with price (£4.95) — the **rare priced domestic version**, of which only one or two are known to survive.
These Clowes dummy copies are not to be confused with proof or advance reading copies. They represent a unique transitional production state and are virtually never seen on the market, particularly with the priced jacket. Printed by William Clowes & Sons, who handled the dummy production ahead of the book's public launch in September 1977.
A cornerstone collectible for the Tolkien completist. Minimal rubbing to jacket, contents clean and bright. A well-preserved and complete example of this elusive state.
Scarcer than most Silmarillion proofs or signed editions — an exceptional survival from Tolkien's publishing history.
