The Book of Lost Tales Part II – Houghton Mifflin Uncorrected Page Proof, 1984
J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien. The History of Middle-earth, volume II.
An American uncorrected page proof issued by Houghton Mifflin, Boston, for the 1984 publication of the second volume of The History of Middle-earth. The cream wrappers are printed in black and explicitly marked Uncorrected Page Proof. The front cover and title page carry ISBN 395-36614-3 and publisher’s code 6-97097.
This volume continues Tolkien’s earliest mythology with the tales of Tinúviel, Turambar, the Fall of Gondolin, the Nauglafring and Eärendel, accompanied by Christopher Tolkien’s notes and commentary. The photographed series list identifies it as volume II, with The Lays of Beleriand and The Shaping of Middle-earth still in preparation.
The wrappers show age-toning, scattered brown spots and light edge wear, with more noticeable spotting on the spine. The photographed preliminary leaves are lightly toned and appear unannotated. No claim of complete collation or unique proof state is made.
A distinctive American proof from the early publication history of Christopher Tolkien’s presentation of his father’s mythology.
