Issued in advance of the official U.S. publication by Houghton Mifflin, this proof features a plain printed cover and typeset interior pages produced by Crane Duplicating Service.

This early pre-publication state includes all textual content and layout for editorial and reviewer use prior to printing. In very good condition with minimal signs of age or wear. A scarce survival and an unusual piece of Tolkien publishing history.
