Essays Presented to Charles Williams — 1947 Uncorrected Proof

Including J.R.R. Tolkien’s On Fairy-Stories — Geoffrey Cumberlege, Oxford University Press, 1947

An uncorrected proof of the collection honouring Charles Williams, containing Tolkien’s essay On Fairy-Stories. The title page bears the Oxford University Press imprint and the date 1947. A preliminary leaf is stamped “Uncorrected Proof”, and working codes are visible at the heads of several photographed pages.

Bound in red wrappers, with the title written by hand on the front. The wrappers show fading, rubbing, creasing and conspicuous pale areas of surface loss towards the foot of the front cover, with wear at the spine ends and edges. An unidentified handwritten inscription is present inside the front wrapper; it is not attributed here to Tolkien or any contributor.

The paper is noticeably age-toned, with spotting visible on the page edges and some preliminary leaves. The photographed text is legible, but the images do not establish a complete collation or a full account of internal annotations.

A working proof of an important Inklings collection, preserving Tolkien’s influential essay on fairy-stories in its original publication setting.
