Farmer Giles of Ham – 1965 Fourth Impression with Fifth Impression Jacket & US Review Slip

The copyright page identifies the book as the fourth impression, 1965. It is paired with a dust jacket whose front flap states “Fifth Impression”. The two should therefore be distinguished: the jacket does not match the impression of the book.

Accompanying the volume is a folded Houghton Mifflin Children’s Book Department publicity sheet, announcing a September publication and a $3.00 price, but without a visible year. A red “HORN BOOK” stamp appears on a patterned endpaper. These are notable review-related associations, although they do not by themselves establish when the book, jacket and sheet were brought together.

The book is bound in yellow-orange cloth with a blue dragon design. The front board has a small dark mark and minor wear. The illustrated jacket shows age-toning, scattered marks and edge wear, and its lower front-flap corner is clipped. It is protected by a clear sleeve. The publicity sheet is distinctly browned and folded; the photographed pages show light age-toning.

Pauline Baynes’s illustrations accompany Tolkien’s comic tale of Farmer Giles and the dragon Chrysophylax.
