Issued by Houghton Mifflin in 1975, this is the advance proof of the American edition, following the George Allen & Unwin UK edition the same year.

In this posthumous work, Christopher Tolkien provides the preface and editorial framing. The translations are some of Tolkien’s most significant contributions to Middle English literature, reflecting both his scholarly and literary brilliance.

The proof is bound in plain green wraps with the title printed on the front and spine. Internally clean and tightly bound. A genuinely scarce proof and a cornerstone for any Tolkien collector focused on his academic and translation work.
