Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, and Sir Orfeo – Houghton Mifflin Uncorrected Proof
Translated by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1975.
The American uncorrected proof of Tolkien’s translations of three medieval poems, issued by Houghton Mifflin. Bound in green printed wrappers, the front is clearly marked “Uncorrected Proofs” and identifies Tolkien as translator.
The collection brings together the Arthurian romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the dream-vision Pearl, and the Breton lay Sir Orfeo. Christopher Tolkien supplies the preface to this posthumous publication.
The wrappers retain their green colour and show light surface and edge wear, small marks and minor corner wear. The photographed preliminary pages show light age-toning and occasional tiny specks, without visible ownership inscriptions. The photographs do not establish the condition of every leaf.
A green-wrapper advance proof linking Tolkien’s literary art with his lifelong study of medieval poetry.
