J.R.R. Tolkien: Smith of Wootton Major (Uncorrected Proof with Illustrations by Pauline Baynes)
Published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1975
An exceptionally scarce uncorrected proof of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Smith of Wootton Major, issued in advance of the second impression published in 1975 by George Allen & Unwin. Bound in distinctive plain orange wrappers, this pre-publication state carries the original publication stamp on the upper cover, noting the issued price (£1.95) and planned release date of 10 July 1975.
This proof features the full suite of interior illustrations by Pauline Baynes, Tolkien’s preferred artist for his shorter works, whose detailed line drawings grace the title spread, chapter openings, and concluding scenes. Printed by W & J Mackay Limited, Chatham, the typography and layout closely resemble the finished trade edition, though the wrappers remain entirely undecorated aside from the publisher’s imprint.
Smith of Wootton Major is one of Tolkien’s most elegant and poignant fairy-tales, composed during a period of reflection on the role of Faërie and the storyteller. Originally written as a contribution to a collection on children’s literature, it stands alone as a late masterwork of the genre.
This proof remains in excellent condition, with minimal shelfwear and no internal markings. The wrappers are firm and clean, the binding tight, and all pages complete.
A very rare Tolkien proof, virtually unobtainable in this state, and an important piece of publishing history from Allen & Unwin’s mid-70s output.
