The Silmarillion (Uncorrected Proof)
J.R.R. Tolkien. Edited by Christopher Tolkien. Published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1977.
A US uncorrected proof of The Silmarillion in plain tan wrappers printed in black. The front is explicitly marked “Uncorrected Proofs” and carries the author, editor and publisher, together with ISBN 0-395-25730-1 and production code 6-97065. These details are repeated on the title page.
The photographed preliminary leaves include a printed map of Beleriand and a listing of the work’s principal sections: Quenta Silmarillion, Ainulindalë, Valaquenta, Akallabêth, and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age. The volume brings together the mythology and histories underlying The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The wrappers show age-toning, light soiling and scattered small marks, including a circular mark near the lower front edge. There is minor edge and corner wear, with a crease at the upper front corner. The photographed interior pages appear generally clean with light toning. The supplied photographs are not a complete leaf-by-leaf collation.
A pre-publication witness to the first American appearance of Tolkien’s mythology of the Elder Days.
