The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays – Uncorrected Proof Copy

A Houghton Mifflin uncorrected proof in blue printed wrappers, with a separately preserved publisher’s advance-proof slip. The cover and title page give ISBN 0-395-35635-0; the copyright page carries the earlier 1983 copyright date, while the US trade edition appeared in 1984.

The accompanying slip has handwritten author, title and sender entries; the probable publication date and price fields are blank. It is shown in a clear protective sleeve and has noticeable age-toning and folds. These handwritten entries should not be confused with an author’s signature.

The volume contains seven essays, including “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics”, “On Translating Beowulf”, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, “On Fairy-Stories”, “English and Welsh”, “A Secret Vice” and “Valedictory Address”.

The blue wrappers are well preserved, with minor handling wear and a few small marks visible. The photographed pages appear clean with light age-toning. The proof slip is more heavily toned than the book.
