The US advance reading copy of Tom Shippey’s study of Tolkien, in pale blue printed wrappers marked “Advance Reading Copy — Not for Resale”. The rear cover announces publication on 16 May 2001 and gives ISBN 0-618-12764-X.

Laid in is a Houghton Mifflin publicity sheet headed “For Immediate Release”, also announcing the May 2001 publication. Shippey explores Tolkien’s fiction through its language, literary traditions and place in twentieth-century literature.

The front wrapper has conspicuous yellowish splash marks and staining, with surface marking and light edge and corner wear. The rear wrapper is cleaner. The publicity sheet has been folded and shows a small mark near its lower edge.
