The Real Middle Earth – Advance Uncorrected Proof

Brian Bates. Palgrave Macmillan, 2003.

An advance uncorrected proof of The Real Middle Earth: Exploring the Magic and Mystery of the Middle Ages, J.R.R. Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings. The illustrated front cover is explicitly marked Advance Uncorrected Proofs; the rear cover gives ISBN 1-4039-6319-3 and an advertised length of 288 pages.

Bates explores the beliefs and imaginative world of Anglo-Saxon and northern European cultures in relation to Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

The copy is photographed enclosed in clear plastic, catalogued previously as sealed. The covering is creased, and small spots are visible along the lower rear-cover area. The interior is not shown and has not been assessed here; the photographs alone do not establish that the plastic is original publisher wrapping.

A distinctive advance copy for collectors interested in the historical imagination behind Middle-earth.
