Smith of Wootton Major – Rare Proof Copy
J.R.R. Tolkien. Illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Published by George Allen & Unwin, London, 1967.
A very scarce advance proof copy of Smith of Wootton Major, issued by George Allen & Unwin to booksellers and reviewers ahead of publication in 1967. Bound in plain grey-green paper wraps with decorative black design to the front cover and the distinctive blue “Book Proof” stamp indicating the published price (7/6) and official release date (9 Nov. 1967).
This proof includes the printer’s misdate “1567” on the copyright page — a known and fascinating error found only in this state. Illustrated throughout by Pauline Baynes in her signature detailed and whimsical style.
This example is in very good condition: the wraps show mild age toning and faint staining, but the binding is tight and pages are clean. A previous bookseller’s pencil note appears on the inside cover. Light creasing to some pages consistent with age and proof status.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of the scarcest Tolkien printed items — essential for any serious Tolkien collector.
