Roverandom (Advance Reading Copy)
J.R.R. Tolkien. Edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond.
Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1998.
This is the rare Advance Reading Copy (Uncorrected Proof) of Roverandom, issued in April 1998 by Houghton Mifflin ahead of the trade edition release. This copy is in exceptional Near Fine condition in the original pictorial card wrappers (cream and navy blue), with no spine creases or marks of use. Internally clean and bright.
Laid in is the original Houghton Mifflin publicity sheet — a rare survival and key addition for collectors. This promotional insert highlights Tolkien’s whimsical tale as “A Major Event for Fantasy Lovers Everywhere,” and includes press contact information.
Roverandom tells the story of a toy dog, transformed by a wizard and swept into a magical adventure across the Moon and under the sea, in a story Tolkien originally invented in 1925 to console his son Michael. Edited with an introduction and notes by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond, this edition also features five illustrations by Tolkien himself.
Proofs of Tolkien’s modern releases are notoriously scarce — and even more so when complete with original publisher materials.
Only one known copy with press release currently for sale worldwide.
A superior example and a prime opportunity for collectors of Tolkien proofs and publishing history.
