Farmer Giles of Ham (50th Anniversary Edition with Press Kit)
J.R.R. Tolkien. Edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond.
Illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1999.
An uncommon example of the 50th Anniversary Edition of *Farmer Giles of Ham* published in the US by Houghton Mifflin in 1999. This copy includes the original publisher's laid-in promotional press kit, issued ahead of the holiday season as part of a three-title Tolkien gift campaign.
This edition features Tolkien's 1949 short story with delightful illustrations by Pauline Baynes, reformatted and expanded with an introduction and notes by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond. Also includes Tolkien’s early draft and notes for a possible sequel.
Bound in green cloth with gilt dragon motif to the front board. In the original illustrated dust jacket (with $17.00 price and dated “1199”). Condition is Near Fine overall — clean, tight, and bright — with a few small surface blemishes to the front of the dust jacket and a faint stain at the top corner. Laid-in ephemera is crisp and complete.
A scarce copy complete with its original promotional press release material — seldom encountered thus.
An attractive and collectible Tolkien edition for readers and collectors alike.
