Roverandom (Advance Reading Copy)
J.R.R. Tolkien. Edited by Christina Scull & Wayne G. Hammond.
Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1998.
This is the **Advance Reading Copy** of *Roverandom*, issued in limited numbers by Houghton Mifflin for early review prior to the book's release. This edition is bound identically to the first edition in green cloth and issued with the full-color dust jacket featuring Tolkien’s own illustrations.
What makes this ARC distinctive is the laid-in promotional sheet, announcing the release as "A Major Event for Fantasy Lovers Everywhere." This additional material is seldom preserved, making this copy particularly attractive to collectors.
The text itself is identical to the 1st printing. With introduction and notes by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond, this edition was published decades after Tolkien originally told the story to console his young son Michael after losing his toy dog on a beach in 1925.
Roverandom is a charming, whimsical tale featuring white dragons, mer-folk, wizards, and other fantastic beings. Rich in imagination and illustrated with five of Tolkien’s own drawings, it stands out as a unique work of children's fantasy from the master of Middle-earth.
Very scarce in this pre-publication format with original publicity material intact.
