Tolkien 1963 Christmas and New Year Card signed Ronald & Edith, together with handwritten letter

1963 Christmas and New Year greetings, with a letter dated 6 April 1963

The Christmas and New Year card is inscribed “Ronald & Edith” to Wilfrid and Nora. It incorporates an original photograph of Tolkien between his holiday companions, identified in the original catalogue as Wilfrid and Nora.

The original catalogue, citing J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide (Chronology, page 64), connects the correspondence with Tolkien's holiday from late March until 1 April 1963, during which he suffered from bronchitis. The suggested Bournemouth location is not firmly established.

The single-page handwritten letter dated 6 April 1963 on headed paper was addressed to ‘My Dear People’. Tolkien discusses his and Edith's health, describes a ‘disastrous holiday’ and thanks the recipients for their ‘company and kindness’.

Condition

The letter has a horizontal fold, creasing, edge wear and small edge tears. The card and letter show age-toning and marks; the card has visible brown staining inside. Please see the photographs of the fronts, backs and inscription.
