Original photograph of J.R.R. Tolkien signed and dedicated to Patrick Hunt.
Together with autographed handwritten letter by J.R.R. Tolkien to Mr. Hunt.
Comes with original envelope.
This is the most famous photograph of J.R.R. Tolkien taken by Billett Potter, probably taken in 1973. It was used on several Tolkien calendars, including the first official Tolkien calendar of 1974, and in several books.
It comes with a handwritten letter to Mr. Hunt, who apparently at that time resides in prison. The photograph and letter are still in the original envelope which was used to send it to Mr. Hunt on 26 January 1973. The letter is from January 25 1973.
In the letter Tolkien writes "It is most encouraging (to an author) to learn that his books have given pleasure and encouragement." and "I have had v. dark days of my own in my time, and I do hope that yours will soon now be over."
The daughter of Mr. Hunt recalls that this letter and photograph were Mr. Hunt's prized possesion and that she (and siblings) had been force fed The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Obviously tolkien's kindness to write this person gave him the courage to change and made him into a life long Tolkienf fan!
A extremely rare opportunity to acquire an original photograph of J.R.R. Tolkien and handwritten letter that will be admired by any Tolkien fan.
