The Silmarillion, George Allen & Unwin, London, 1977. Publisher's sample binding.
The usual sample book prints the half-title, title pages, copyright page and the first 32 pages of the text followed by a couple of hundred blank pages to fill out the book.
This copy has blank text leaves and a folding printed map, shown in the photographs.
There are signs that the original sample text leaves, including the opening 32 pages, have been removed. It is not a readable text, an intact textual proof or a complete published first edition.
Bound in blue cloth with the stamping and decoration used in the finished book. Some fading and rubbing to the cloth and toning to the paper are visible.
No dustjacket as issued.
An unusual production-related Silmarillion item, with its blank contents, folding map and suspected missing sample leaves clearly disclosed.
Digital photographs available; enquire if interested.
Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
