From the personal working library of J.R.R. Tolkien. It is signed by him on the top of the inside front page (J.R.R. Tolkien Exeter Coll) and has the "From the Library of J.R.R. Tolkien" sticker at the bottom left of the inside cover.

The front cover bears Tolkien's early JRRT monogram, with three dots and a curly T. The printed library label inside the cover is a separate provenance label, not a handwritten signature.

Slight age-related wear to the original binding and toning to the paper, otherwise approximately fine.

Several pages with annotations in pencil (in the hand of J.R.R. Tolkien); pages 80, 88, 101.
Some small corrections added in black ink on page 133.
Five titles in the opening publisher's list are marked in pencil and one checked; the hand responsible for those list markings has not been identified.

An annotated philological volume from Tolkien's working library, preserving both his early Oxford ownership inscription and his distinctive monogram.
