Good and Evil in The Lord of the Rings – W.H. Auden, Oxford 1993, Copy S
One of 26 lettered copies within an edition of 126.
The colophon specifies 126 copies: 100 numbered and 26 lettered A–Z. The lettered copies have the special colophon and illustrated cover. This copy is lettered S by hand in the colophon and has a decorative S on the front board. ISBN 0 85455 029 1.
Bound in grey paper-covered boards with a contrasting dark spine and green endpapers. Printed on single sides of fine Conqueror paper, with a three-colour illustrated title incorporating the initials W and A and a portrait of Auden. The title and colophon bear the date 1993.
A well-preserved copy with clean boards and clean pages in the photographs. The handwritten S identifies the copy; it is not an author’s signature. This is the bound lettered edition, not an uncorrected proof.
A distinctive lettered edition of Auden’s essay on Tolkien’s moral world, complete with its special illustrated title and Copy S colophon.
Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
