First edition of Tolkien’s late fairy-story, illustrated by Pauline Baynes

London: George Allen & Unwin, 1967. First UK edition, first impression.
Issued in the publisher’s original black pictorial paper-covered boards, with the distinctive red, white and green design by Pauline Baynes.

The book is clean and bright internally, with unfaded spine lettering and clean endpapers. The boards show rubbing along the spine folds, edges and corners, with some white showing through the black background, and there is a slight spine lean. No ownership writing is reported.

A sound and attractive first-impression copy of one of Tolkien’s most enchanting post-war fairy-stories.
