The Lord of the Rings — 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, American Ninth Printing, in Original Slipcase
The Fiftieth-Anniversary Deluxe Lord of the Rings
J.R.R. Tolkien,
The Lord of the Rings. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Boston and New York. The one-volume fiftieth-anniversary deluxe edition, first issued in 2004. ISBN 0-618-51765-0.
Ninth American printing, with the number line DOC 10 9. The copyright page identifies the fiftieth-anniversary text first issued in 2004; the year of this later printing is not separately stated.
The complete story is brought together with the appendices and index in a substantial single volume. The anniversary edition introduced a reset and extensively corrected text, prepared with access to Tolkien’s manuscripts and annotated copies, together with a new anniversary note by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. Its distinctive supplementary features include Tolkien’s facsimile pages from the Book of Mazarbul, additional Hobbit family trees and Christopher Tolkien’s maps.
Original Binding and Publisher’s Slipcase
The original near-black textured binding has gilt and copper-coloured foil decoration: the Eye and Ring design on the front, Tolkien’s signature reproduced on the rear, and title and author’s name on the spine. All page edges are gilt, with red endpapers and a red ribbon marker.
The original matching slipcase carries a cream title label on one side and Tolkien’s drawing of Minas Morgul on the other. The book is shown both inside and outside the case.
This edition includes two full-size, two-colour fold-out maps and a bound-in colour section reproducing Tolkien’s leaves from the
Book of Mazarbul.
Condition
A clean, attractive copy in near-fine condition. The gilt edges remain bright and the decoration is well preserved. The photographed preliminary and text pages are clean, with no ownership inscription visible. There are light signs of handling at the case edges and opening.
The opened outer wrapping and original publisher’s fiftieth-anniversary information band are retained around the slipcase. The book itself has been removed and opened for photography; this is not an unopened or factory-sealed copy.
