The Hobbit — Illustrated by the Author, 2023 Edition, Sealed

The Hobbit Through Tolkien’s Own Art

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: Illustrated by the Author. HarperCollins, London, 2023. The enhanced illustrated hardback edition. ISBN 978-0-00-862778-2.

This edition brings a much broader selection of Tolkien’s own art into the pages of Bilbo’s adventure. More than fifty sketches, drawings, paintings and maps accompany the story, placing familiar finished illustrations alongside further examples of the visual world Tolkien created for The Hobbit. The text is printed in two colours.

The combination gives the book a distinct character: the storyteller and illustrator are the same person, and the landscapes, houses, lettering and maps form part of a single imaginative journey from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain and back.

Original Green Presentation

The original dark green pictorial dust jacket carries gold runic borders, a circular mountain landscape with a red sun, and a reproduction of Tolkien’s signature on the front. The spine repeats the mountain device, title and author’s name. The rear has gold review quotations and the publisher’s ISBN label. A blue panel of runic lettering is visible along the fore-edge in the angled photographs.

This is the standard hardback issue of the 2023 author-illustrated edition, rather than the separately issued deluxe slipcased version. No separate slipcase accompanies this copy.

Condition

Still sealed in clear shrink-wrap. The jacket retains rich colour and bright gold decoration, and the book presents attractively from all photographed angles. The folds, seams and reflections of the wrapping are visible, particularly along the edges and across the rear.

The wrapping has been left intact. The internal condition, any jacket-flap price and the individual printing number have therefore not been examined; no first-printing claim is made. The eight photographs show this particular copy from the front, back, spine and fore-edge.

A sealed copy of the enhanced Hobbit illustrated throughout with Tolkien’s own art, in its original green-and-gold jacket.
