The Seventieth-Anniversary Hobbit



J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. HarperCollins, London. The seventieth-anniversary edition first issued in 2007, here in its twenty-fifth printing, identified by the numeral 25 on the copyright page. ISBN 978-0-261-10328-3. The date of this later printing is not separately stated.

This attractive reset edition brings together Tolkien’s story and his own illustrations, with maps on the endpapers and a preface drawn from Christopher Tolkien’s anniversary foreword. Five colour illustrations by Tolkien accompany the standard black-and-white drawings and the additional monochrome Mirkwood illustration, and the volume includes the opening chapter of The Lord of the Rings.

Original Binding and Dust Jacket



In the publisher’s black binding, with gold lettering on the spine and Tolkien’s monogram. The original pictorial jacket reproduces Tolkien’s mountain, forest and dragon design, with the title against the pale sky, runic borders and the corresponding landscape on the rear. A clear protective sleeve is fitted.

Thrór’s Map and Wilderland appear on the endpapers. There is no separate slipcase with this copy.

Condition



A clean, attractive copy in near-fine condition. The black boards and gold lettering present well, and the photographed endpapers and text pages are clean, with no ownership inscription visible. The pictorial jacket retains its colour, with light handling at the extremities. Folds and reflections of the clear protective sleeve are visible.
