The Hobbit — American Seventieth-Anniversary Edition in a Decorated Custom Slipcase

The Seventieth-Anniversary Hobbit

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston and New York, 2007. The American seventieth-anniversary edition. ISBN 978-0-618-96863-3.

This attractive reset edition brings together Tolkien’s story and his own illustrations, with maps on the endpapers and a preface drawn from Christopher Tolkien’s anniversary foreword. Five colour illustrations by Tolkien accompany the standard black-and-white drawings and the additional monochrome Mirkwood illustration, and the volume includes the opening chapter of The Lord of the Rings.

Original Binding and Dust Jacket

In the publisher’s black binding, with gold lettering on the spine and Tolkien’s monogram. The original pictorial jacket reproduces Tolkien’s mountain, forest and dragon design, with the title against the pale sky, runic borders and the corresponding landscape on the rear. A clear protective sleeve is fitted.

The original American jacket retains the $25.00 price on its front flap and the seventieth-anniversary publication statement. It does not bear the medallion added to later seventy-fifth-anniversary jackets.

Decorated Custom Slipcase

Housed in a separately made black slipcase, decorated in gold with a mountain landscape, dragon and Tolkien monogram. The case is an additional presentation and protective element, rather than the publisher’s original packaging.

Condition

A clean, attractive copy in near-fine condition. The black boards and gold lettering present well, and the photographed endpapers and text pages are clean, with no ownership inscription visible. The pictorial jacket retains its colour, with light handling at the extremities. Folds and reflections of the clear protective sleeve are visible.

The black-and-gold custom slipcase presents attractively from the photographed sides, with light handling at its edges and opening.

An attractive American anniversary Hobbit, in its original unclipped jacket and a decorated custom slipcase.
