The Hobbit — HarperCollins Facsimile First Edition, Fourth Printing, in Original Green Slipcase
The Hobbit as First Published
J.R.R. Tolkien,
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. London: HarperCollinsPublishers. Fourth printing of the facsimile edition first published in 2016, complete with its original illustrated dust-jacket and matching green slipcase. ISBN 978-0-00-744083-2.
This edition recreates the book as it appeared in 1937, including the original text of “Riddles in the Dark”, before Tolkien revised Bilbo’s encounter with Gollum for the second edition of 1951. It offers a distinctive reading of the story, preserving the earlier relationship between Bilbo, Gollum and the ring.
The modern copyright page identifies the 2016 facsimile edition and carries the printing numeral 4. The date 1937 on the reproduced title page belongs to the original edition. This is a modern fourth printing of the facsimile, not a first printing or an original 1937 copy.
Tolkien’s Illustrations, Maps and Original Design
The green cloth binding reproduces Tolkien’s original mountains, dragon and runic decoration in dark blue. The spine carries the title, author’s name and publisher’s device. The top edge is coloured green. Tolkien’s blue, green, black and white mountain landscape continues around the dust-jacket, here protected by a clear removable sleeve.
The interior reproduces the monochrome frontispiece of Hobbiton, Tolkien’s black-and-white drawings and the original page layout. Thror’s Map and the Map of Wilderland appear on the endpapers, with the red lettering and details of the original designs. The photographed openings include the opening chapter, “Riddles in the Dark”, “Over Hill and Under Hill”, “Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire” and the concluding pages.
Matching Publisher’s Slipcase
The original green slipcase repeats the book’s dark blue mountains and dragon, with the title, author’s name, runic device and HarperCollins imprint on its closed spine. Its decoration complements both the cloth binding and Tolkien’s dust-jacket. The book, jacket and slipcase are offered together.
Condition
A very attractive, well-kept copy. The green cloth and dark blue decoration remain bright, the coloured top edge is strong, and the photographed interior is clean. The dust-jacket presents very well beneath its clear protective sleeve. The matching slipcase has minor handling wear at the edges and corners, while its decoration remains crisp.
The gallery begins with the book in its slipcase and the case from several angles, followed by the jacket, binding and illustrated interior. This is the publisher-issued jacket belonging to the modern facsimile edition.
