A Boxed Celebration of the Original Hobbit

At the heart of this set is a facsimile of the 1937 first edition of The Hobbit, recreating the original text, Tolkien’s illustrations and maps, and the book’s familiar early presentation. It preserves the first version of “Riddles in the Dark”, before Tolkien revised Bilbo’s encounter with Gollum to bring the story into closer alignment with The Lord of the Rings.

The Gift Set and Its Additional Material

As stated on the publisher’s outer box, this edition was issued with:

• A facsimile of the first edition of The Hobbit.
• A CD of archive recordings of Tolkien reading from the story.
• A separate reproduction of Thror’s Map, with the hidden moon-runes revealed when held to the light.
• An accompanying booklet on the book’s history, including Tolkien’s poem “The Hoard” and his children’s lecture on dragons.

The accompanying historical material was prepared by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. Together, the book, sound recording and map bring several aspects of Tolkien’s storytelling and original design into a single presentation set.

Original Decorated Presentation Box

The dark blue box is decorated in green with mountains, stars, a crescent moon and Tolkien’s dragon. A lenticular image on the front presents the mountain landscape from the original dust-jacket design. The title and author’s name appear on the closed spine, while the rear carries the publisher’s account of the edition and its contents.

The seven photographs show this particular sealed set from the front, back and several angles. The box and its decoration are part of the item offered.

Condition

Still sealed in the original clear shrink-wrap. The box retains strong colour and presents attractively, with minor storage wear to the outer packaging. White label residue is visible on the rear, with a smaller white patch towards the right edge; both are shown clearly in the photographs. The folds and reflections of the wrapping are also visible.

The set has been left unopened, so its internal condition and the book’s individual printing number have not been examined.
