The Hobbit — American Anniversary Edition in a Decorated Custom Slipcase
The American Anniversary Hobbit
J.R.R. Tolkien,
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Boston and New York. A later printing of the American anniversary edition first published in 2007, with the 75th Anniversary medallion on its original dust jacket. ISBN 978-0-618-96863-3.
This edition brings Tolkien’s own illustrations together with a reset text and a short preface by Christopher Tolkien, excerpted from his foreword to the fiftieth-anniversary edition. The story is accompanied by Tolkien’s colour paintings and black-and-white drawings, including the atmospheric
Mirkwood illustration. Thror’s Map and the Map of Wilderland appear on the endpapers, and the volume also includes the opening chapter of
The Lord of the Rings.
Edition and Printing
The American edition was introduced for the seventieth anniversary of
The Hobbit in 2007. Later printings retained the edition while adding a gold “1937–2012 75th Anniversary” medallion to the jacket. This copy belongs to that later issue: its copyright-page number line runs from 25 down to 19. It is not a first printing of the 2007 edition.
Original Binding, Jacket and Custom Slipcase
The book remains in its original black binding, with gilt title, author’s name and publisher’s imprint on the spine. The publisher’s jacket reproduces Tolkien’s mountain-and-forest design in green, black, white and red, with its runic borders and anniversary medallion. The rear panel retains the printed $26.00 price and ISBN barcode. A clear protective cover has been fitted over the jacket.
The accompanying black custom slipcase has a textured surface, with a gold mountain border, title and dragon on one side and Tolkien’s monogram on the other. It was made separately from the publisher’s edition and provides an attractive protective housing for the book.
Condition
A bright, well-presented copy with clean-looking pages and map endpapers, and strong gilt lettering to the binding. The jacket retains clear colour and shows only light handling wear beneath its protective cover. A small blue pen mark is present on the lower edge of the text block and is shown in the final photograph. The custom slipcase remains attractive, with light surface handling marks.
No ownership inscription is visible in the photographed opening pages. The photographs show the actual book, original jacket and custom slipcase offered together.
