The Hobbit — 2012 Collector’s Edition in a Decorated Custom Slipcase
The 2012 Collector’s Edition
Published by HarperCollins in 2012 and sold through The Book People, this Collector’s Edition of
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again combines Tolkien’s story with his own illustrations and maps, a preface by Christopher Tolkien and an additional chapter from
The Lord of the Rings. ISBN 978-0-00-792704-3.
The copyright page identifies the Collector’s Edition as published in 2012 and records the text reset in 1995. Set in Linotype Plantin and printed and bound in Great Britain by Clays Ltd, St Ives plc. The title page includes a printed reproduction of Tolkien’s signature.
Illustrations, Maps and Additional Texts
Tolkien’s black-and-white illustrations include the Mirkwood picture as well as the eight familiar drawings accompanying the story. Thror’s Map is reproduced across the front endpapers and the Map of Wilderland across the rear endpapers, both printed in red and black.
The preface is an extract from Christopher Tolkien’s foreword to the fiftieth-anniversary edition of
The Hobbit, first published in 1987. The volume also includes the opening chapter of
The Fellowship of the Ring, “A Long-expected Party”, extending the reading beyond Bilbo’s adventure.
Grey Woodland Cover and Decorated Custom Slipcase
The grey pictorial cover combines dark woodland silhouettes with gold lettering, butterflies and other decorative details. The woodland design continues on the rear, while the spine carries the title, Tolkien’s name and monogram and the HarperCollins device.
This copy is housed in a later black custom slipcase. Its front is decorated in gilt with a mountain border, the title and Smaug, with Tolkien’s monogram on the reverse. The fitted slipcase is a separate protective addition to the HarperCollins edition.
Condition
A very well-preserved copy, with clear, bright cover decoration and only light signs of handling. The map endpapers and the text openings are clean and attractive, with the paper a light cream colour.
The custom slipcase is sound and retains its bright gilt decoration, with light surface marks and minor rubbing to the edges. A pleasing Collector’s Edition with an attractive protective case.
