HarperCollins aimed to offer something special to loyal Tolkien fans, especially with Christopher Tolkien's limited public appearances. Thus, the idea of a signed bookplate was born, which both Christopher Tolkien and Alan Lee agreed to.

About 900 bookplates were signed, with less than 500 distributed in the US, and only 250 in the UK, the rest were kept for other promotions. This is the rare UK edition!
