First UK One Volume Paperback Edition, published 1968, signed by J.R.R. Tolkien on the title page. Also includes a letter on Allen & Unwin letterhead confirming the shipment of the signed copy to the original owner.
With a proliferation of forgeries, nice to have the confirmation of the signature, particularly by the publishers. A Very Good copy of an extremely collectable book.
Covers by Pauline Baynes, showing 2 of 3 panels of the 'Triptych' artwork originally painted for the slipcase of the 1963 Deluxe Edition. This is the famous 1 volume paperback carried around by college students in the late 60's, during the 'Battle for Middle Earth' controversy.
Protected by a full black leather clamshell case with red title and author inserts on spine. Gilt stamped with tolkien's "Ring and Eye" on the front boards, raised bands and red embossed "Ring & Eye" on spine.
The spine of the book is lightly faded and some light rubbing to the edges.
Whole and complete, not many signed copies of The Lord of the Rings are available.
