Rare Signed First Edition Lord of the Rings 3-Volume Set by J.R.R. Tolkien.

For sale is a remarkable first edition set of The Lord of the Rings, consisting of three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, Twelfth Impression (1962); The Two Towers, Ninth Impression (1962); and The Return of the King, Eighth Impression (1961). This set is particularly unique as The Fellowship of the Ring includes J.R.R. Tolkien’s signature on a pasted-in slip of paper.

Published in Britain by George Allen & Unwin, these books measure approximately 8vo and are in good condition. The dust jackets are original and match their respective impression numbers, bearing the publisher's price of 21 shillings. While there are minor signs of age, such as light edge creasing, a few small foxing marks, and faint sellotape residue from a previously fitted protective sleeve, the overall condition is well-preserved for collectors.

All three books retain their original maps, with the Fellowship map showing a tiny edge tear. The book cloth covers are clean with minimal shelf wear, and the spines exhibit a slight slope. There are occasional minor marks on the page edges, but the text blocks remain in very good condition. The Fellowship of the Ring also includes Tolkien postage stamps affixed to the front free endpaper and a newspaper clipping on the paste-down endpaper.


This is a rare and highly collectible set, made even more valuable by Tolkien's signature in one of the volumes. A must-have for any serious Tolkien collector, this set represents an exceptional opportunity to own a piece of literary history.
