Les Juifs d'Espagne 945 - 1205, by H. Graetz, signed by J.R.R. Tolkien on the front end paper

Les Juifs d'Espagne 945 - 1205, by H. Graetz. Translated from German by Georges Stenne. Michel Levy, Paris, 1872

Les Juifs d'Espagne 945 - 1205, by H. Graetz. Translated from German by Georges Stenne. Michel Lévy, Paris, 1872.
Signed in pencil on the end paper by J.R.R. Tolkien, with an additional note "purchased at now forgotten date, prob. in 1920s".

Bound in tan half leather with marbled boards, marbled endpapers and patterned page edges. The spine has raised bands, gilt decoration and gilt lettering.
Very nice looking and rare book, difficult to find in any state.
The text has sporadic foxing and some stains around the edges.
English-language pencil marginalia are visible in the text. These annotations are noted without attributing every marginal note to Tolkien. Additional pencil identification notes on the facing preliminary leaf are likewise recorded without an attribution.

Conspicuous fading across the upper front board, with rubbing and small marks to the leather, and wear at the corners and spine ends.

Heinrich Graetz was amongst the first historians to write a comprehensive history of the Jewish people from a Jewish perspective. His magnum opus History of the Jews was quickly translated into other languages and ignited worldwide interest in Jewish history. Maurice Hess, an admirer of Graetz, published the third volume under the title Sinai et Golgotha (Paris, 1867), and the sixth volume was translated by Georges Stenne under the title Les Juifs d'Espagne (ib. 1872), both released by Michel Lévy.

Extremely interesting historical book about the history of the Jews, previously owned and signed by J.R.R. Tolkien.
