The 1942, 3rd overall printing, or the third printing of the 1st Edition (1942).

Includes a colour frontispiece in addition to the standard eight black and white illustrations.
The black and white illustration of Mirkwood was removed from this and later printings.
This was a lower quality edition produced to the Book Production War Economy Standard. 1.509 copies bound. Printed in November 1942 by Unwin Brothers.

The book is stated 3rd impression on title verso.

The text block is clean and bright, without foxing, bound in the green colored original cloth, stamped in dark blue, from the publisher.
A beautiful clean bright copy, looks near fine, especially since it was produced under war economy standards.
Spine shows rubbing to the corners and sides. Slight nudges to the edges and corners.

The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink still show clear and bright against the endpapers, with no foxing.

A beautiful copy, in absolute Fine condition, sadly lacks the dustjacket.

A highly collectable copy, hard to find in any condition.
