The Lord of the Rings, Paperback Book Boxset from 1965; 3 volumes in green slipcase, very first Ballantine slipcase
This set includes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
The Fellowship of the Ring is the 2nd printing from October 1965.
The Two Towers is the 1st printing from November 1965.
The Return of the King is the 1st printing from December 1965.
Ballantine Books hurriedly issued the first authorized paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings
in the United States in 1965, in response to the illegally issued Ace Paperbacks edition. The covers stated "The Authorized Edition of the Famous Fantasy Trilogy." The foreword was extended to include a few words about purchasing this edition "and no other" as a "courtesy to living authors."
This is the very first Ballantine slipcase, showing a simple green box (and not the later Barbara Remmington illustration). Rare to find in any condition!
These paperback books are in fine condition. With some bumps, rubbing to the corners. Text block has still the orange paint, that did not fade. Books show some wear to the spines and corners of the paper boards, but for the rest look unread.
The slipcase has a few rubs and bumps, mainly to the corners and edges, but overal looks in very good condition!
A great find for the collector and a lovely set of the very first Ballantine green slipcase.
Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.
Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions.
