Tale of Gondolin

The Tale of Gondolin is a book most Tolkien lovers did not hear of yet, maybe because it is a private publication and strictly LIMITED to a Worldwide printing of just 50 COPIES. It is a book Compiled from the writings of J.R.R. TOLKIEN assembled and revised by author Alexander Lewis, illuminated and illustrated by Ruth Lacon.

Here at Tolkien Library we had an opportunity to review and read one of the 50 copies. This article will shed a light on the writer Alexander Lewis, the illustrator Ruth Lacon, the story line of The Tale of Gondolin and the history of creation of The Tale of Gondolin.

Tolkien books in Translation

Translations from tolkien's work are very numerous. Most believe that the fictional works of Tolkien, particularly "Lord of the Rings" and even more "The Silmarillion", could not have been written in any other language than English. Any translation must necessarily lose some of the subtlety. Yet the translations widen the public able to read the professors works.

tolkien's works have been translated in Armenian, Basque, Breton, Bulgarian, Byelorussian, Catalan, Chinese (Simple), Chinese (Trad.), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, Estonian, Faeroese, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luxembourgish, Macedonian, Marathi, Moldavian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish a,d Ukrainian. Hope i did not miss any language! In addition, there are translations on line in Latin, Middle English, Quenya and even Sindarin. Tolkien is also available in Braille.

Since it is hard and almost impossible for The Tolkien Library to reconstruct a list of all these edition i make a call for people to help me out and send me there lists. That is a list of all editions in there language. A first list was made by endorion.org; It can be found right here. Hope more will follow!

Site News

tolkienlibrary.com has been improving a lot this month. There was a huge amount of work done. First behind the scenes, where the database (not yet visible for the public) is slowly growing and should get operational in the following months. Also a site map has been added to help people browsing through the ever growing site. A lot of new interesting articles were written en many new links added in the link section. New pictures are being added all over the site and new pages build on weekly basis.

tolkienlibrary.com is still working on the article "a first try to make a reconstruction of tolkien's personal library". We still need more information. Do you have more info on tolkien's personal library, the donations by Tolkien, by his family and the many sales (like the one by Daerons, Blackwell, Loomebooks, ea.). Are there books from tolkien's personal library in your collection? Can we add them to the list and describe them?

The Tolkien Library has up for sale some very nice Tolkien books, ranging from first edition Hobbits, US and UK Lord of the Rings, limited and signed sets. More books will be added next weeks. Keep an eye on the book sales when you can. Some opportunities will not return again! Check the rare Tolkien books up for sale here.
