J.R.R. Tolkien – The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Boxed Set (HarperCollins, 2013).

A highly desirable sealed four-volume clothbound collector’s set, housed in the original illustrated slipcase.

A beautifully produced HarperCollins Collector’s Edition set, issued in 2013, comprising The Hobbit together with the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings. This edition is bound in coloured cloth with elegant Tolkien-inspired designs, the spines forming a continuous tree motif across the set, a distinctive and highly recognisable feature of this issue.

The set is housed in the original black slipcase featuring the iconic White Tree of Gondor design in white and red. Each volume includes a facsimile Tolkien signature on the title page, adding to its appeal as a collector’s presentation set.

The set remains still sealed in the original publisher’s shrink-wrap, which is complete and intact. The wrapping is somewhat loose with excess material and light creasing, as often seen with stored copies, but has not been opened. The books inside appear unread and in excellent condition.

This 2013 collector’s edition is widely regarded as superior in build quality and presentation compared to later reissues, particularly the 2022 version, with stronger cloth bindings and a more refined finish.
